Nestled in the heart of Urwa, Mangalore, the Mariyamma Temple reverently known as Marigudi stands as one of the most cherished and historically significant shrines of Tulunadu. With a legacy spanning nearly 800 years, the temple holds deep spiritual importance for devotees across the region.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Mariyamma, worshipped as a powerful form of the Divine Mother. She is revered as the protector and nurturer of all her devotees, blessing her children with strength, health, and prosperity.
The temple has a deep historical connection with the Mogaveera community, who have played a significant role in preserving its traditions over generations. At the same time, the temple welcomes devotees from all communities, reflecting the inclusive and universal nature of Goddess Mariyamma’s grace.
A distinctive feature of Urwa Shri Mariyamma Temple is its revered Kumbara Manethana tradition. For generations, the Kumbara Manethana has played an important role in performing and preserving the temple's sacred poojas and rituals. Their hereditary service remains an integral part of the temple's spiritual heritage and traditions.
The temple’s customs are deeply rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Tulunadu, representing a beautiful blend of faith, tradition, and community devotion that continues to thrive to this day.
The temple celebrates its festivals with deep devotion, traditional rituals, and community participation.
Mari Pooja is the annual and most important festival of the temple, celebrated in Feb or March with great devotion. The celebration includes sacred rituals such as Madasthana Seve, Raashi Pooje, Kanchil Seve, Haalu Hukkisuva Pooje, Maha Ranga Pooje, Rathotsava, and Darshana Bali.
Dasara is a nine-day festival celebrated with daily Darshana Pooje and devotion. The final day features Maha Ranga Pooje and Rathotsava, along with Annasantarpane offered to devotees throughout the festival.
Chandikayaga is a powerful Maha Yaga performed before the annual Mari Pooja. Devotees gather in large numbers to witness the ritual and seek blessings. Maha Annasantarpane is also conducted on this occasion.
Varamahalakshmi Pooja is celebrated annually with great devotion during the month of Shravan. The ritual is performed to seek blessings for wealth, prosperity, and family well-being.
One of the most unique traditions of the temple is the offering of fish-shaped gold ornaments, known as meen-maale.
Devotees offer gold fish to the Goddess after the fulfillment of their prayers, such as good health, safety, and prosperity.
Over the years, this tradition has become an important part of the temple’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
The gold fish offering represents a devotee’s gratitude to Goddess Mariyamma for her blessings and protection.
